Natal chart calculator — Sun, Moon and Rising signs
Enter your date, time and place of birth and the calculator will find which zodiac signs the Sun and the Moon were in and which sign was rising on the horizon. Free, no sign-up. The time is converted using the time zone of your birthplace, including daylight saving time of those years.
Talk the result through with a guide
The calculation shows the energies, but not how they play out in your life. A guide will go through the result with you in a video session and answer your questions. Guides with the “First 15 min free” badge offer a free introductory session.
Full catalogueHow the natal chart is calculated
A natal chart is a snapshot of the sky at the moment of birth. The calculator takes the date, the local time and the coordinates of your birthplace, converts the time to Universal Time using that place’s time zone (including the daylight saving rules of those years) and finds the positions of the Sun and the Moon with the Swiss Ephemeris — the same astronomical tables professional astrology software uses.
The Sun spends about a month in each sign, so your Sun sign almost always matches your usual “star sign”. The Moon changes sign every two to three days: if it changed sign on your birthday, without an exact time the calculator shows both options. The Rising sign (Ascendant) — the sign rising in the east at the minute of birth — changes roughly every two hours, so it is not calculated without a time.
These three points are only the beginning. A full chart includes the planets in signs and houses and the relationships between them — aspects; they are read together, taking your situation into account. A natal chart is a tool for self-discovery, not a prediction of events: what it means for you is best explored with an astrologer.
FAQ
What if I don’t know my birth time?
Leave the field empty: the calculator will work out the Sun and Moon signs for noon and won’t show the Rising sign. The birth time is usually on the birth certificate or hospital records; an astrologer can also refine it from life events — this is called rectification.
Why is my Sun sign different from my usual star sign?
If you were born on the day the sign changes, the boundary may fall within that day: the Sun enters each sign at a different time every year. A calculation by date, time and place is more precise than a table of average dates.
How is the Rising sign different from the Sun sign?
The Sun sign describes the core of your character and what you strive for. The Rising sign is how you come across and how people see you when they first meet you. The Moon is about emotions, habits and what makes you feel safe.
Which time should I enter — local or my current time zone?
The local time at your birthplace, as in your documents. The calculator converts it to Universal Time using the time zone and daylight saving rules of those years.
